Last week we broke down our favorite movies of the year—as well as our favorite documentaries, and the best movies you might have missed—but it’s time for an intermission. Before we move along to television, comics, and internet culture, we canvassed the office to find out what new music WIRED staffers loved this year.

Make no mistake: 2014 was a banner year for music. Not in terms of sales or anything like that—it took until the fourth quarter for an album that wasn’t the Frozen soundtrack to go platinum—but for general creativity, and even fun. Standout albums were everywhere, “alt-R&B” continued its dreamy ascent, and weirdos completely took over hip-hop. Our retrospective is embedded below in all its glory, but feel free to cruise on over to Spotify as well. (And we highly recommend shuffle for this one—trying to sequence 100 songs doesn’t make a ton of sense, given the grab bag that it is, so just embrace the randomness.) What’d we miss? Let us know in the comments.
