BMW VGT: Clad in the red and blue race color scheme, this Bimmer runs on a 3-liter six cylinder that’ll make 541 horsepower. 50:50 weight distribution and rear wheel-drive will make it easy to lose the tail as needed. Sony

Volkswagen GTI Roadster: This VW gets 503 hp from a 3-liter twin-turbo VR6 engine paired with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. We like the low-cut windshield for the roadster experience. Sony

Mitsubishi Concept XR-PHEV -- Like the SUV they showed off at Los Angeles, the XR-PHEV is a plug-in hybrid. No word on power, but it looks like the slit windows and rear wing make it look like the rally-ready Evo of the future.

Chevrolet Chaparral 2X: As ridiculous as you'd expect from racing brand of old, the Chaparral 2X is powered by shock wave-producing laser (yes) that give the car a zero-to-60 time of 1.5 seconds. Sony

There’s a reason so many cars look the same these days: Automotive designers can’t just make whatever they want. They’re restricted by the laws of physics and aerodynamics, endless government regulations, and the desires of shareholders. But what happens when you get rid of those limits? What do you make? Those with a PlayStation and a copy of Gran Turismo 6 are about to find out. To mark the 15th anniversary of the racing game series, Sony asked the world’s automakers to come up with special vehicles to populate the virtual world.
The results are appropriately insane. Each participating automaker was tasked with creating a grand touring (“gran turismo”) vehicle, one with two doors and gobs of power. Some are takes on the classic GT, like the Mercedes-Benz AMG with its stretched hood, gaping grill, and muscular V8 engine. Others are more radical, like the sci-fi flavored mid-engined Aston Martin. A few are ridiculous, like the Chevrolet-produced Chaparral that’s powered by lasers.
So far, there are are nine of these specialty cars confirmed for GT6, most of which are now available to download (for free). Sony says there’s more to come next year, from Audi, Lamborghini, Mini, and Peugeot. To see what’s available now, fire up your PlayStation or click through the gallery above. Just don’t expect to see any of these in the flesh and metal anytime soon.
