We’ve Got Retro Soul and Surprise Reunions in This Week’s Playlist

The day that music no longer has the power to surprise is the day we stop caring—and even though things can sometimes feel a bit formulaic, today is not that day. How could it be? Young Texas musicians like Leon Bridges are making pitch-perfect retro soul that sounds like Sam Cooke; Chance the Rapper continues to be one of rap’s most unvarnished and experimental MCs; Diplo takes a breather for one of his calmest tracks in recent memery; and 20 years after their last album, Sleater Kinney comes out of NOWHERE to announce a new album and drop its first single. Hell, even James Blake lets loose a new doozy (even though it’s not on Soundcloud).

As usual, we’ve added the tracks to our ongoing Spotify playlist of great new music, and created a standalone playlist (below). Keep the recommendations coming.

The Tracks:

Leon Bridges, “Coming Home”

Diplo, “Everyday”

Chance the Rapper & The Social Experiment, “No Better Blues”

Thelonious Martin feat. Mac Miller, “Her”

Gappy Ranks, “Spread My Wings”

Logic, “Buried Alive”

Sweater Beats, “Cloud City”

Rustie feat. Danny Brown, “Attak (Mike 5000 Watts Chop & Screw)”

Banks, “Beggin For Thread (Gryffin & Hotel Garuda Remix)”

Sleater-Kinney, “Bury Our Friends”
