Rumor has it that this year, Santa’s two lists aren’t split into “Naughty” and “Nice,” but instead, those who are Marvel fans and those who prefer DC. If that’s the case, then he’ll surely be happy with the last week of news and rumors about superhero movies, which has been pretty evenly split between both companies’ stables, especially if you factor in the late-last-week announcement of Benedict Cumberbatch finally signing on to play Marvel’s Doctor Strange. In case you’ve been too busy thinking about gifts and toys for all the girls and boys, here are the highlights of this week’s superhero movie news.
SUPER IDEA: Al Pacino Talking to Marvel Studios About a Mystery Project
Prepare to add another name to that list of unexpected actors showing up in Marvel movies; in an interview on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Michael Corleone himself admitted that he’d met with Marvel, although he didn’t even hint about a possible project. Sorry, Glenn Close; you might no longer be the most unexpected choice for a Marvel role.
Why this is super: Given Pacino’s tendency in recent years to go broad and big wherever possible, this might not be super from an aesthetic point of view. In terms of PR wins, however, there’s no denying that having an actor of Pacino’s standing show up in Doctor Strange or whatever would be a lot of feathers in Marvel’s cap.
SUPER IDEA: Someone Living and Someone Dying in Batman v Superman
According to a rumor on Badass Digest, one iconic DC character won’t be appearing in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for a surprising reason: he’ll be dead. Sorry, fans hoping to see Commissioner Gordon in the movie. On the plus side, the same report claimed Batman’s sidekick Robin has been spared from an identical fate; early drafts of the script had revealed the Boy Wonder died prior to the movie’s opening, but that’s been dropped from more recent versions.
Why this is super: Taking Gordon out of the latest cinematic version of the Batman mythos is a smart move, at least in terms of differentiating the new status quo from what’s come before—and also from the Gordon-centric Gotham TV show. Also, if Gordon is dead for nefarious reasons, that’d be a dramatic set-up for a potential Batgirl movie if Warner Bros. decides to go in that direction.
SUPER IDEA: Josh Brolin Getting Ready For a Superhero Fight
Given that Thanos has been glimpsed in both The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy to date, fans might be wondering which super-team he’ll eventually face when he graduates from behind-the-scenes threat to Big Bad status. Brolin, currently promoting the upcoming release of Inherent Vice, answered that question while talking to ComingSoon.net. “Ultimately, it’s Thanos against everyone,” he said. Well, that’ll make for a crowded poster.
Why this is super: Letting the assembled heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe loose on Thanos is a sure way of letting the villain go from “that purple guy with the chin who sits around a bunch” to a genuine threat, especially if Brolin’s definition of “everyone” includes latter citizens of that universe like Benedict Cumberbatch’s forthcoming Doctor Strange and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man. If we get a Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther)/Brolin face off out of this, that’d be worth the price of admission by itself.
SUPER IDEA: Jason Momoa Playing Aquaman Four Times (At Least)
By now, fans are used to actors being signed to superhero roles for some time (Samuel L. Jackson famously signed a nine-movie contract with Marvel ahead of the first Iron Man movie), and Momoa has revealed that he’s no different. Talking at a recent convention appearance in Brazil last weekend, he revealed he’s currently signed to play DC Entertainment’s Aquaman in four movies over the next few years.
Why this is super: Continuity in casting is a good thing to have if you’re planning on building a coherent multiple-movie universe, so seeing that Warners is planning ahead in terms of its superhero franchises is a welcome, if unsurprising, sight. There’s something that is a surprise, however; we know what all of Momoa’s four movies are already. It’s been all-but-confirmed that he’ll show up in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to some degree, and he’ll obviously show up in the 2018 solo Aquaman movie. Those remaining two movies? Surely they’ll be 2017’s Justice League Part One and 2019’s Justice League Part Two. It’s like the Marvel Studios slate, but with more forward-planning (or, if you’re feeling less charitable, less spontaneity).
SUPER IDEA … MAYBE: Wonder Woman Has A Writer
Just a couple weeks after Michelle MacLaren signed on to direct Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman movie, the studio revealed the flick also now has a writer: Jason Fuchs, whose resume includes 2012’s Ice Age: Continental Drift and next year’s Peter Pan reboot, Pan. Admittedly, that doesn’t make it easy to judge whether or not he’s a good fit for the character, who celebrates her 75th anniversary in 2016, but let’s have enough faith in MacLaren to keep things on track, if nothing else.
Why this is super: Fuchs is enough of an unknown quantity that we don’t really know for sure if this is super, to be honest. Could it be villainy? It’s genuinely too early to say, but this does make Pan a far more interesting prospect in the meantime. If you can handle Neverland, then surely that means taking on Paradise Island will be … well, probably not easy, but certainly not as difficult as it could be.
