Pebble helped kicked off the current smartwatch craze. Now, the company is offering a limited run of splashy new colors, including a fluorescent pink, green, and blue version of its original watch. With the early adopter and nerd bro market well-tapped, perhaps Pebble is going after trendsetting teens with these Lisa Frank-style hues, which are a stark contrast to the stately Pebble Steel and even the original Pebble’s black, white, and red options.
“Color may be the most influential factor in the decision to buy, or not to buy,” Western Washington University associate professor Jason Morris says of consumers in his paper “The Purpose and Power of Color in Industrial Design.” As we saw with Apple’s highly-sought-after gold iPhone 5s and its multi-hued iPods, just changing up the color can help drum up new demand and reach different markets. Pebble prioritized color from the get-go, but didn’t originally have the capacity to deliver a rainbow of choices.
“When we did the Kickstarter, we crowdsourced the colors but we couldn’t do all of them,” Pebble product evangelist Myriam Joire told WIRED. “While not necessarily these shades, pink, green, and blue were highly requested.”
The watch is still $150, and is available through the Pebble website.
