Measuring Inbreeding in the Greek Gods



In population genetics, there is a method of measuring how inbred a certain individual is, known as the inbreeding coefficient . Previously, I used to this technique to examine the amount of inbreeding in the X-Men and was intrigued to find that there wasn’t any.


However, it’s an entirely different matter when it comes to mythology. In mythological tales, there is a great deal of incest. As you can see below, the family tree of the Greek gods is a rather convoluted one:



And here, unlike in the case of superheroes, there is quite a bit of inbreeding. For example, using the calculated coefficients of the ancient Pharaohs as a template, it seems that Ares has an inbreeding coefficient of 37.5%. This is due to the fact that his parents—Zeus and Hera—are siblings, as well as his grandparents with each other. Zeus has an inbreeding coefficient of 25%. I don’t know which Greek god has the highest coefficient, so please feel free to share calculations in the comments.


Of course, whether the superhuman powers along with complete dysfunction and strange behavior of the Greek gods is a genetic result of this inbreeding is left as an exercise to the mythological geneticist.



How to Save the Net: Keep It Open


The premise of openness—that information and data should be freely exchangeable—is at risk. The Heads Of State


For all of its history, the Internet has enjoyed the fruits of an openness principle: the idea that anyone can reach any site online and that information and data should be freely exchangeable. Applications such as YouTube and Skype have been introduced without the need to seek permission of any Internet service provider or government. Nearly 3 billion users enjoy myriad mobile apps and other Internet-based services thanks to the open standards, common interfaces, and rich connectivity that permissionless innovation has delivered.


Today, that premise of openness is at risk—because it threatens the very concept of sovereign national borders that was established in 1648 by the Treaty of Westphalia. In response, more governments are prohibiting access to certain kinds of content, leading to national and regional legislation that may splinter the Internet and interfere with end-to-end connectivity. The Snowden assertions have led countries like Germany and Brazil to propose that all information about their citizens must be confined to physical equipment within their borders. Others, like Iran, want to build isolated “national internets.” China already monitors and controls what information is accessible to its citizens.



Another risk factor for the Internet is the potential for international political and trade disputes to affect connectivity and freedom of speech. For example, new top-level domain names like .vin and .wine have led to major complaints by France, Spain, and Portugal over who may properly register second-level domain names such as champagne. If Internet governance policy gets mixed up with trade policy, one might see attempts to exchange Internet openness for some adjustment in a tariff barrier or other political accommodation. Such disputes come and go, but if they produce uncertainty about connectivity, they could erode motivation for investing in Internet businesses and infrastructure.


We have a unique opportunity to redesign the Internet's governance by enshrining the openness principle and the concept that all stakeholders should participate in policy development. The US has offered to transfer its present oversight responsibilities to a private-sector, nonprofit, multi-stakeholder organization, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which was originally established in 1998 for precisely this purpose. I strongly support this proposal. There is no guarantee that such an approach will be accepted by other nations, but the value of an open, fully connected, and accessible Internet should not and must not be underestimated. Societies of the 21st century everywhere on the planet deserve nothing less.

How to Save the Net: A CDC for Cybercrime


The Internet may be made up of software and hardware, but it is an ecosystem that depends on a key human value: trust. The networks and systems must be able to trust the information we are sending, and in turn we have to be able to trust the information we receive.


This system of trust has allowed businesses around the world to share data rapidly and reliably on almost every issue—except their own security. Too many firms are still unwilling to share crucial information about the network attacks, data breaches, and outright cybertheft they’ve experienced—and what they do to defend themselves. Companies keep everything from basic facts to crucial technical details from one another and, notably, from the government, largely because they’re suspicious and fearful about what others might do with that information. The fears run the gamut: Tech companies worry about their brand, potential prosecution, even exploitation by the intelligence community; consumer firms wonder how the stock market will react; oil companies fear aiding their competitors; and energy companies are nervous that information will end up being exploited by those they fear far more than hackers: environmental lawyers.


The result is that, as cybersecurity guru Kevin Mandia of FireEye puts it, “Nobody gets smarter.” Victims of attacks may learn how to adjust to a new threat, but only after the fact, while the world at large too often doesn’t get the guidance needed to bolster defenses in a timely manner.


Just as the CDC plays a key part in public education on preventative health care, so too could a cyber-CDC be a hub for better “cyberhygiene.”


Discussions of what government should do about this predicament tend to focus on some kind of change in the law to raise regulations and/or lower liabilities. That is well and good, but government should also think about building a new organization for the cyber age. And it can do so by taking inspiration from one of the most successful agencies created in the past.


The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started out in 1946 with a mission to prevent malaria in the US. It has since become the bulwark of the modern American public health system, not only ending the scourge of malaria within the US, but helping to eliminate global killers like smallpox. Now it stands guard against new outbreaks like Ebola and pandemic flu. The CDC succeeded because it established itself as a hub for research on threats that the private market wasn’t equipped or motivated to confront and the public system wasn’t well organized to handle. In so doing, it became a trusted clearinghouse for public and private actors, by sharing important but anonymized information with anyone who needed it. Though its leadership is appointed by the government, its staff is recruited from a wide range of specialties to enhance its independence and credibility.


A similar gap could be filled by creating a cyber-CDC. Forming an agency whose core mission is cybersecurity research and information sharing would help change the nature of the game. It’s not just that there are many similarities between the spread of malware and communicable disease (even the terminology is the same—“viruses,” “infection,” etc.), it is that the CDC plays a key role now missing in cybersecurity in terms of the trust factor. We similarly need a publicly funded research organization, trying to understand emerging trends and threats, as well as a reliable clearinghouse, transparently sharing information to anyone and everyone who needs it


As with the CDC in public health, the cyber version would not replace all the other players, but fill a gap that now exists between the public and private space, especially when it comes to the trust factor. It could be structured in a similar way, with leadership appointed by the government, but with staff recruited across a wide range of specialties to aid its independence and credibility. Or, as one writer for the Cyber Security Law and Policy blog joked, “Essentially, take everything the CDC already does and slap a cyber in front of it.”


Forming an agency whose core mission is cybersecurity research and information sharing would help change the nature of the game. By having a research focus and origin, it would distinguish itself from organizations like the NSA, law enforcement agencies, the federal Computer Emergency Readiness Team, trade groups, and private companies that now all try to play this intermediary role. These groups each bring strong capabilities, but they also often have mixed interests and dueling motives that can undermine trust. What’s more, this new agency would have a more cohesive structure, mandate, and funding than the valiant but outgunned volunteer outfits that also play in this space.



Implementing a cyber version of the CDC might even have a wonderful side benefit to the diplomatic tensions that so trouble the Internet today. By focusing on research and information sharing, it could serve as a hub for cooperation with all the various state and international agencies as well as non-state actors that matter in cyberspace. Such an entity might serve as a key intermediary in evermore heated political environments, just as the CDC proved to be a trusted diplomatic back-channel during the Cold War.


The benefits would extend all the way down to the individual level. Just as the CDC plays a key part in public education on preventative health care, so too could a cyber-CDC be a hub for better “cyberhygiene.” When the Heartbleed security bug was discovered in April—creating potential web vulnerabilities on a mass scale—everyone from software companies and media outlets to the NSA was asked for answers, but none of their responses were fully trusted.


There are many technical, policy, and legal gaps in cybersecurity today. But maybe what is missing most is an intermediary we can trust. This new problem might be best answered by an old success story.

According to the original Hacker News thread, user RoryGlyphic, who created gifYouTube, says that the site does have trouble with VEVO videos. The site may also take some time processing your GIF when it’s bombarded with traffic. It should also be noted that this isn’t an official YouTube extension so it’s possible that it could get taken down. However, similar sites like YouTube Doubler have been up for years, so it may not be a worrisome issue.


Otherwise, this clever little site is one of the simplest ways you can turn a favorite clip into an endless looping GIF. Enjoy.



Behind the Scenes of a Reality Show Where Magicians Fight for Fame


We know you desperately want to see what happens behind the scenes of your favorite magic competition show. OK, fine, Wizard Wars probably is the only magic competition show, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be your fave, and it’s always fun to see television, um, magic in action.


The video comes from show creator Rick Lax, who shot the footage during the making of Wizard Wars. The program, basically a reality show where magicians face off in something akin to Iron Chef (the original Japanese version, not that sorry Americanized version) but with magicians, started as an internet video made by Lax and some fellow Las Vegas wizards. After the clip made the rounds online (and possibly at the suggestion of WIRED) Syfy turned it into a series judged by Penn & Teller. “Walking around the set was surreal. Such an upgrade from my living room,” Lax says, referring to the set for his video clip.


Magician Justin Flom—known to daytime TV viewers as That Guy Who Seems to Freak Out Ellen DeGeneres, but who matches wits with Wars winners on the show—agrees. “It was bizarre to have a giant cast and crew making essentially a more expensive version of what Ricky and I edited over breakfast at Bellagio cafe in Vegas,” he says.


“The most unlikely part of the YouTube-video-to-Syfy-show transition was that the original Wizard Wars vision stayed in shape,” Lax says. “Everyone told me, ‘Hollywood is going to tear your idea apart,’ but that didn’t happen. Only thing that happened was the magic got bigger and better.”

Antibiotics in early life may alter immunity long-term

Most bacteria living in the gut play a positive role in promoting a healthy immune system, but antibiotic treatments often do not discriminate between good and bad bacteria. The study published today in Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology helps scientists understand how different antibiotics affect good bacteria.

“This is the first step to understanding which bacteria are absolutely necessary to develop a healthy immune system later in life,” says Kelly McNagny, a professor in the Dept. of Medical Genetics who led the research along with UBC microbiologist Brett Finlay.


The researchers tested the impact of two antibiotics, vancomycin and streptomycin, on newborn mice. They found that streptomycin increased susceptibility to a disease known as hypersensitivity pneumonitis later in life, but vancomycin had no effect. The difference in each antibiotic’s long-term effects can be attributed to how they changed the bacterial ecosystem in the gut. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis is an allergic disease found in people with occupations such as farming, sausage-making, and cleaning hot tubs.


The researchers stress that infants should be treated with antibiotics when needed, but they hope these results will help pinpoint which bacteria make us less susceptible to disease. This could open up the possibility of boosting helpful bacteria through the use of probiotics.


“Probiotics could be the next big trend in parenting because once you know which bacteria prevent disease, you can make sure that children get inoculated with those bacteria,” says McNagny.

Ultra-Cheap TVs, Now With Roku Steamers Built Right In

In a few years, 4K content should be plentiful and OLED sets could be entirely affordable. But we’re not there yet. While you wait it out, it might be best to buy a cheap-but-decent set. A range of new sets from TCL and Hisense are good options, and they offer one feature no TV at any price can match: built-in Roku, with no box or stick required.


That eliminates an extra piece of hardware for Roku fans, and it also brings an intuitive, widely used, and well-stocked smart-TV platform to two brands trying to grab U.S. market share. Like Roku boxes and USB sticks, each TV comes with a dead-simple remote that was developed in collaboration with Roku. It’s not a motion controller like the one included with the the highest-end Roku 3 box, but the remotes for the TCL and Hisense sets are much simpler compared to your average TV remote. Buttons are kept to a minimum, although there are dedicated ones to quickly access Netflix, Amazon Video, Rdio, and Vudu.


The navigation and search functions of each set were also developed with the help of Roku. Roku channels and input sources are boiled down to a grid of tiles on the main menu screen, and you can search for actors, shows, and movies across all Roku channels using the remote or the Android/iOS Roku app.


Out of the box, the streaming selection should eclipse the built-in offerings of the big-name TV makers, although major services such as Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, and Pandora are generally available on all smart-TV platforms these days. Where Roku excels—along with ease-of-use—is its breadth. The service has 1,700 channels to choose from, so you’re more likely to find special-interest programming: A “Mullet” channel for ‘80s hair bands, a channel devoted to vibraphones, and so on. There’s one helpful touch in the mix for traditional TV, too: Once you plug in an antenna and perform an over-the-air scan, the channels are listed by name in their own “Antenna” menu.


The TVs themselves won’t blow you away with specs, but they do offer plenty of punch for the price. The TCL and Hisense sets have built-in dual-band Wi-Fi, screen sizes ranging up to 55 inches, and 120Hz refresh rates at their larger sizes. TCL’s Roku TV lineup will be available first, and they’ll be shipping at the end of this week: A 32-inch/720p set for $230, a 40-inch/1080p/120Hz model for $330, a 48-inch/1080p/120Hz set for $500, and a 55-incher for $650.


Hisense’s Roku TV lineup will be available at the end of September, and they’ll use direct LED-backlight systems. They’ll all be 1080p sets, too: A 60Hz 40-incher and 48-incher, and 120Hz 50-inch and 55-inch models. Hisense says it won’t set an MSRP for their Roku sets, and you should expect the prices to be very agreeable.
