The End of the Throw Away Appliance

I went to press the “start” button on the dishwasher. Nothing happened. There was no sound, there were no lights. Nothing. It didn’t start. I convinced my daughter to help me take out all the dishes and wash them by hand. It really didn’t take too long, but I still love having a dishwasher.


When I had time, I started trying to troubleshoot and figure out the problem. The first step is always to turn off the power and turn it back on. You never know, that might fix it – but not in this case. After a couple more tests, it seemed clear that the washer was indeed getting power. I had narrowed the problem down to either the control board (the computer for the dishwasher) or the front control panel.


Here is the real problem. I wasn’t exactly sure which part was broken. The control panel costs about $100 and the control board has a price around $120. On a gamble, I could order the control panel (pretty sure that’s where the problem was), but what if I’m wrong? I could possibly return the piece but the whole process could take a significant amount of time.


Are there other options? Yes, there are two things to consider. First, I could call the repairman. These guys charge about $150 to come out and then you would have to pay for the part on top of that. No, that’s not a good option. Could I just buy a new washer? Yes, a new washer would cost between $250-$300.


Now you can see why we are in the age of the throw away appliance. Why would you repair an appliance if it is just a little bit more to buy a new one? Even if I did spend $100 to fix my washer, who knows – something else might break next week. In too many cases it’s just simpler to buy a new thing than to repair. I think this sucks.


What ever happened to Luis and Maria’s Fix It Shop on Sesame Street? You just don’t see places like this anymore. It’s not a good business plan since people just buy new appliances when they break. I miss Luis and Maria.


Maybe the companies that make appliances don’t really mind that you have a throw-away dish washer. Maybe they are even happy that you have to buy a new one. However, I think the future is near. In this future you will once again be able to repair your appliance. Why? I’ll give you three reasons.


Youtube. Even though we have devices that aren’t so easy to figure out, we have help (by we I mean people that want to repair their own stuff). Let’s go back to my dishwasher. If I do a quick search, I can find several videos showing exactly how to fix it – like this one. How awesome is that? And if you can’t find it in a video, you can probably find your answer in some DYI appliance forum. This is what makes the internet so great.


Arduino. The Arduino is an inexpensive and open source processor. Think of it as a tiny programmable chip, that’s essentially what it is. You can build all sorts of awesome stuff and it isn’t even that complicated. I have a group of kids that meet each week to work on building simple things.

But could you replace the control board in your dishwasher with Arduino? Yup. In fact, someone already did. So, the Arduino can solve the problem of replacing an expensive control board. What if manufacturers just used Arduino to begin with? It might be cheaper for them to create and it would be easier for you to fix. Also, just imagine all the cool upgrades you could add to your Arduino-based appliance.


Why does an oven need a computer in it anyway?


3D Printers. But what if you break a gear or some moving part in your appliance? You are pretty much done for, right? Oh, no – not right. What about the 3D printer? These things are becoming both cheaper and more accessible each day. Even now, I think you could print out any part you would need for a repair. Ok, I suspect there will be some problems ahead. The manufacturers are probably going to have a fit over people sharing parts data. They will claim that the parts for their washing machine are copyrighted and you can’t print out your own. They might even be legally correct (I have no idea). Whether they want it to happen or not, parts will be printable in the near future. And by “near future”, I mean now.


This will be the end of the disposable appliance. I, for one, welcome our 3D printed Arduino powered appliance Overlords.



Lytro Wants to Transform Its Futuristic Cameras Into Night Vision Goggles


Lytro is a company that easily captures the imagination. Leveraging something called light field technology, it offers a kind of futuristic camera that lets you refocus pictures after you’ve already taken them.


But for all the hype surrounding these cameras, they’ve never really taken off. That’s because, for most consumers, camera technology doesn’t matter as much as it once did. Smartphones have eaten into the territory once dominated by point-and-shoot cameras, and professional-level DSLRs rarely excite anyone other than, well, professionals.


That’s why Lytro is rolling out something new. It’s not a camera. It’s a hardware developer kit—a technology that would allow outside companies to harness its light field technology in new ways. The idea is that developers could create a special camera that can analyze soil samples—or a thermal sensor that can recognize your particular heat signature, a new way of verifying identity.


Known as the Lytro Development Kit, , it includes an application programming interface, or API, that lets developers write applications and custom code that utilize Lytro’s image processing algorithms and other tools. But Lytro says it will also work with its customers to design custom hardware, providing options to switch out a device’s lenses and sensors, depending on the company’s intended application.


In addition to unveiling its developer kit technology, Lytro also announced partnerships with four organizations that are already creating products using the platform. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is developing new cameras that can look into deep space and cameras that may be mounted on future rovers. General Sensing, a medical devices startup, is looking into using the tech for baby and child monitoring. The Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate is considering supercharged Lytro night vision goggles. And there’s one more “major industrial partner” Lytro won’t name yet that is using their LDK for work with nuclear reactors.


“In the normal course of our business, we would just never get to build new products like that,” Jason Rosenthal, CEO of Lytro, tells WIRED. “But through the LDK, we’re able to open up the platform and technology in this way, so all these customers can really go after esoteric applications and spread the adoption and capabilities of the product.”



The Best Baby Picture Ever of a Planetary System

Astronomers have taken the best picture yet of a planetary system being born. The image, taken by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the high-altitude desert in Chile, reveals a planet-forming disk of gas around a young, sun-like star, in great detail.


“The first time I saw this image, I thought it was actually probably a simulation—it was way too good,” said Tony Beasley, director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, in a video accompanying a press release. The NRAO helps operate ALMA.


The disk has gaps and rings that are carved out by nascent planets—features that have only been modeled in computer simulations. The star, named HL Tau, is 450 light-years away in the constellation Taurus. It’s only about a million years old—remarkably young to be already giving birth to planets.


A star forms when a cloud of gas and dust collapses under its own weight. As the embryonic star comes together, it spins, and the excess gas and dust flatten out into a surrounding disk like a pizza. All that stuff in the disk starts to form particles that then clump together, accumulating until they eventually form asteroids, comets, and planets. As those budding bodies grow, they plow through the remaining material in the disk, creating the gaps and rings seen in the new ALMA image.

Republicans Taking Over Congress Isn’t the Privacy Nightmare You’d Think

NSA reform may be the last true bipartisan issue.


Republicans won victories nationwide in Tuesday’s midterm election, handily taking control of Congress and ousting two key critics—Senator Mark Udall (D. Colorado) and Senator Mark Begich (D. Alaska)—of the NSA. The GOP takeover of the legislative branch means Republicans will chair all senate committees, including the powerful Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.


Privacy advocates like the ACLU are often aligned with the Democratic and liberal sides of politics, so it stands to reason that some might worry this would be a crushing blow to privacy. The biggest NSA defenders are Republicans; the Patriot Act that justifies much of the spying behavior disclosed by Edward Snowden was created and passed under a Republican administration and Congress; and a majority of Republican lawmakers have voted to enhance those spying powers over the years, even after the Snowden information was revealed.


Further, 2015 is shaping up to be a key year in the fight for privacy in the post-Snowden era. A number of provisions of the Patriot Act will be up for reauthorization next June. The USA Freedom Act, which aims to curtail NSA powers, will also finally be up for consideration in the Senate. With more than half of the American people disapproving of the NSA’s activities, reform is a clearly pressing issue.


Yet, a Republican majority in the House and Senate is not the devastating blow to privacy you might have expected it to be. Here are four reasons why.


Everyone Hates Clandestine Spying on Americans


Though NSA reform once was a partisan issue, Edward Snowden’s revelations of the depth of government surveillance united Democrats and Republicans in calling for an overhaul. Neema Singh Guliani, legislative counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union, says it’s too early to tell what direction the new leadership will go, but she says the issue of NSA reform is not a one-senator or a one-party issue.


Take Colorado, for instance. Outgoing Democratic Senator Mark Udall was one of the Senate intelligence committee’s few members who persistently criticized the agencies it oversaw. He fought all expansions of NSA reach and opposed using drones to spy on US citizens, introduing a bill in 2013 to ensure private drone operators could not spy on people in this country.


If he were to be replaced by a pro-NSA senator, the weight of the reform movement would have become severely unbalanced.


In fact, Republican Cory Gardner, who beat Udall handily by 4 percentage points, has such a good record on privacy that Udall was essentially unable to run on his own sterling record. Gardner recently reversed his position on matters of privacy. Though he initially voted for the updated and expanded Patriot Act in 2011 (which Udall was staunchly against), Gardner’s record changed dramatically after Snowden’s NSA revelations, consistently voting against expanding NSA reach. As a congressman, he co-sponsored the EFF-backed version of the new USA Freedom Act.


This kind of bipartisan support for privacy issues is not unique to Colorado, as one look at the congressional scorecard compiled by the coalition for StandAgainstSpying reveals.


Personality Matters as Much as a Voting Record


Voting in favor of privacy isn’t enough. Lawmakers must actively scrutinize the surveillance state to be effective. Mark Jaycox, legislative analyst with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, says a lawmaker’s personality is just as important as the votes he or she casts.


“We lose someone like Udall who has been a vociferous advocate of privacy and has been an active overseer of the intelligence committee, and who we get [in his place] is Gardner—who politically is very similar to Udall,” Jaycox says. “But we’re losing personalities who have been actively overseeing and actively being transparent on these issues and calling the NSA out … and we don’t know how active their replacements will be.”


Active and engaged lawmakers are essential on the intelligence and judiciary committees, Jaycox notes, because the most important oversight is conducted before and after the votes occur in hearings and in private classified briefings. “We have their votes. But votes are only half the story here. The other half is how they perform on the committee—if they’re going to ask difficult questions and if they’re going to serve as overseers of the intelligence committee.”


Democratic Senator Mark Begich of Alaska was another harsh critic of government spying who lost his seat. Begich, who was a member of the intelligence committee, had a voting record of consistently upholding our privacy rights and of being tough on the NSA.


“You knew that Begich was going to go to that briefing and ask them 50 questions,” Jaycox told WIRED.


Begich’s replacement, republican Dan Sullivan, a former Alaska Department of National Resources commissioner, has no record to speak of on matters of privacy. Jaycox says it’s important that vocal advocates for privacy get placed on the intelligence and judiciary committees.


“It is incumbent on Senator McConnell and the new majority to insert as good if not better replacements than their democratic counterparts—people who will ask tough questions that Senator Paul is asking or that Senator Udall would have asked,” Jaycox says.


A Pro-NSA Chair of the Intelligence Committee Isn’t All-Powerful


As key provisions of the Patriot Act move closer to their expiration nexy year, Congress will have to confront privacy and domestic security head-on. “The issue of NSA reform is a must-address issue,” Singh Giulini explains.


But now that the Republicans control the Senate—Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina will chair the intelligence committee—it may be harder to pass comprehensive NSA reform that limits what kind of information can be tracked and stored, from whom, and using which methods. Burr once famously said, “If I had my way, with the exception of nominees, there would never be a public intelligence hearing.”

This doesn’t sound promising for privacy reform. But Burr can’t have his way simply by wielding the gavel. All eyes will be on him, and members of his own party have expressed outrage at the aggressive behavior of the intelligence-gathering community. A quiet reauthorization of the Patriot Act will not be possible in this environment.


“Based on what we hear from a lot of members, there is a lot of discomfort in a quiet re-authorization where there is not a full debate and a full understanding of what is being passed. It’s an issue that is not going to go away, and leadership will have to deal,” Singh Guliani notes. Adding that everyone knows “it’s not something we can kick the can on indefinitely.”


Although Burr has been an outspoken supporter of the NSA, he’ll have a hard time fighting the reform momentum that has swept Capitol Hill. “All of that is going to shift onto chairman Burr and create pressure on him to take a closer look at these issues,” Singh Guliani says.


And although the committee chairs have the prerogative to set the agenda, “junior members do hold power and sway within the committee and that can supplement any deficiencies that a chair of the committee may have,” Jaycox says.


This Is the Big Test of Bi-Partisanship


There are three main bills and issues up for discussion that impact privacy—USA Freedom Act, the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act, and reform of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. Although the USA Freedom Act, which sets forth some reforms, was led by Senator Leahy who will now be stripped of his chairmanship of the intelligence committee, USA Freedom Act enjoys bi-partisan support, as does ECPA.


Jayfox says passage of CISA, however, is unlikely any time soon. “CISA will remain a longshot in this Congress and hopefully will always remain a longshot,” he says.


The question now is whether the new leadership will feel the pressure to address privacy reforms in the lame-duck legislation session or if it will put off the issue until the next session.


“We don’t know how this new leadership will prioritize the issue….Grassley hasn’t come out with a position on USA Freedom Act. He hasn’t supported or opposed the bill so it’s hard to predict,” Singh Guliani says.


She notes, though, that over the last few weeks the Republican leadership has been vocal about wanting to push the USA Freedom Act through. “Last night we saw Paul and other members say we want to work across the aisle on bills and pass bills that get on the president’s desk. This bill is an opportunity to see if they follow through on some of those promises,” she says.


“All the stars are aligned on it. It has the support of lawmakers and the support of civil liberties groups.”



Super-Practical Electric Scooter Has a Removable Battery You Charge Indoors




As a rule, being two blocks from a baseball stadium hosting a World Series game is a bad place to test a vehicle. The traffic is crazy, pedestrians are spilling off the sidewalk, and the joyous mayhem is generally inconvenient for those just passing through. In this case, though, it wasn’t a problem. Riding through the alleys and main thoroughfares of San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood, around the corner from AT&T Park less than an hour before game time, I easily snaked between cars crowding together for the chance to pay $80 to park for a few hours, twisting the throttle to pop through small openings.


My ride for the afternoon was the GenZe, an all-electric scooter designed to make American youngsters swoon. As far as two-wheelers go, the GenZe isn’t about being stylish: It’s got no flash, nothing to make anyone look twice. Its focus is relentless practicality, something it does well.


The scooter is made in Michigan, but its roots are in India. GenZe is a new, American subsidiary of the Mahindra Group, the Mumbai-based conglomerate with its hands in the auto, aerospace, agriculture, construction, energy, IT, hospitality, finance, and real estate industries (to name a few). It’s never had much presence in the US, and the new branch is tasked with breaking into the American scooter market, which, compared to markets in Europe and Asia, is wide open.


“We wanted to bring a development, an innovation to a market that’s never really seen anything quite like this,” says Alex Boyce, GenZe’s brand manager. The target is the city-loving millenial who doesn’t want to deal with maintaining and parking a car, especially one with an internal combustion engine that makes the planet sick.


There are other electric scooters for sale in the US, but the options aren’t terrific, and it’s hard to find a good balance of capability, practicality, and affordability. From what GenZe has shown us so far, it could provide fill that gap. Its scooter will go for $2,999 (and there’s financing available). That’s more expensive than other options, but within reach of many young adults and college students (or their generous parents).


Its 1.6-kWh lithium-ion battery provides 30 miles of range, which is plenty for a vehicle designed strictly for tooling around town. To charge the 25-pound battery, you pop it out of the scooter, schlep it inside, and plug it into a standard 110-volt outlet. It’ll be fully loaded in about three and a half hours. Like all lithium-ion batteries, it degrades with time: GenZe estimates 800 charge cycles will reduce it to 80 percent of its initial capacity. GenZe could equip the bike for fast charging, Boyce says, but it doesn’t seem necessary, and would take away from the focus on simplicity and cost-efficiency.


The GenZe benefits from the instant torque provided by its motor, and it takes less than eight seconds to reach top speed. Problem is, that top speed is just 30 mph. For city riders who want to keep up with traffic on major streets, that’s cutting it close. It’d be better to be able to get up to 35 or 40 mph, so drivers don’t feel encouraged to pass you, which is intimidating. GenZe has good reason to limit the speed, however: at a Vmax of 30 mph, people in most states won’t need a special license to ride it. California buyers will need an M2 moped license.


The seven-inch touchscreen displays all the standard info (speed, charge level, range), and lets you unlock the scooter with a PIN instead of a key. That can be convenient for everyone, but it’s especially useful for fleet purposes, which GenZe sees as a market in addition to the youths.


For inexperienced riders, the GenZe is a good place to start. It has an Easy mode that seriously tones down the power and disables the throttle when the front brake is applied—since both controls are operated by the right hand, accelerating while trying to stop is a standard rookie mistake. There’s also Sport mode for those who want to a bit more hustle, and an Eco mode that splits the difference. Thanks to an aluminum frame, the scooter weighs about 215 pounds, which makes it easy to keep upright at low speeds and on tight turns. If you forget to pop up the kick stand before hitting the throttle, the bike won’t go at all.


The scooter can only seat one (we imagine anyone who reaches its 275-pound maximum won’t get the full performance benefits), but it’s got room for plenty of cargo. Rather than the standard storage box, there’s a large bin behind the rider. A smaller storage compartment up front could easily hold a purse, and GenZe plans to add a phone charger. Again, it’s all about practicality: No one will drool over the GenZe or take a photo as it rolls by. But owners will likely find it does what they expect and need.


GenZe is now taking pre-orders for the scooter, with deliveries planned for the spring. It will start with sales in California, Portland, Oregon, and Michigan (where its manufacturing facility is based), to make sure it can deliver spare parts and maintenance when necessary. After whatever early bugs pop up have been dealt with, it will look into expansion, possibly beyond the US. “We want to get this model right,” says Yesim Erez, GenZe’s head of marketing.
